How do I make my text gender-neutral (epicene writing)?

On the Rewrite window, open the Epicene tab and choose a neutralization form — from double forms to inclusive neologisms.

  1. Start Rewrite and open the Epicene tab.
  2. Under Neutralization form, choose the approach that fits your needs.
  3. Run the rewrite and download the result.

Each approach follows a different logic:

Neutralization form Description and example
Double form Mentions both genders separately (e.g. étudiantes et étudiants)
Midpoint Merges both forms with a midpoint (e.g. étudiant·e·s)
Hyphen Merges both forms with a hyphen (e.g. étudiant-e-s)
Lexical neutralization Uses epicene words (e.g. le personnel instead of les employés)
Neologisms and neutral forms Uses new neutral words (e.g. iel, celleux, toustes)
Feminization of titles and professions Uses the feminine form of titles and professions (e.g. autrice, ingénieure)
Proximity agreement Agreement follows the nearest word (e.g. les femmes et les hommes sont belles)
Majority agreement Agreement follows the group’s majority gender
